Arc 3
Not-Just-Human
Everyday Life
We cannot present the lives of others as if we were living them. Educated guesses about their everyday routines are needed in order to invent an understanding of what was necessary for them to survive. Not to think about what was lost, but about what we now have, loyal to our own loud and ruthless present.
The past is encountered in the detail of everyday life…. accepting a shared humanity across an immensity of time (McEwan 2025, 74).
