Underwater Whistle

Various locations, Suffolk coast

21st century

These two-part plastic whistles may have been used by women in coastal settlements to summon their menfolk back from the sea. Colours in the Age of Consumption marked gender significance, with pearlescent, pastel and pink tones being extensively used to make items attractive to women and girls. In extreme cases, female babies were dressed in and surrounded by only pink items from birth.
