The Oil Cat
Buena Suerte Guadalupe, Nuevo Los Angeles
The remains of a cat object liberated by our archaeofutupologists was found during waste cleanup by the environmental group Guerrilla Channel Gurls. Their anti-regentrification activism requires the intentional destruction of connections to the neighbourhood’s pre-war past. It was felt necessary to forget about the world destroyed by unsustainable consequences of oil, its discovery, exploitation, over dependence, and destruction, not to venerate it!

The statuette of a cat seated on his hind legs is made of Chinese porcelain in turquoise glaze with glass eyes and bronze gilt stand. The animal’s pose is reminiscent of eighteenth-century Chinese chimeras and guardian lions. A hole on the lower part of the animal’s spine suggests that it served as an incense burner, now covered by the later addition of the richly decorated gilt cushion.

The Oil Cat:
A Look Back to the Cultural Life of LA
This public platform transports you to old Los Angeles prior to the energy wars of the 00021st century, and recreates a museum exhibition at the Getty Center. This porcelain cat exhibit, acquired by an oil millionaire, was the most famous influence reflecting a world of appearances and posturing. It was an era of cultural decline, when the obsession with individual freedom was valued above equitable behaviour. This largely toxic era prior to the blackout cannot be lamented. Revisiting it makes us reflect on how fortunate we are in our age of care connection and community.

El Gato en el Trono: Poder, Ornamento y Domesticidad
(The Cat on the Throne: Power, Ornament, and Domesticity)
This exhibition explores the intersection of luxury, symbolism, and everyday life through the lens of animal representation in art. The cat, often associated with independence and mystique, is elevated to a throne, questioning hierarchies and the human tendency to project status onto objects and beings.
