Fossilised Good Luck Charm

0002023CE +\- 1ma

Bexley Lessness Abbey Shell Bed,  London

Recently translated ancient Han scripts describe the use of good luck charms containing a leaf, five walnuts, and beans produced for refugees on their uncertain migrations. This fossil may be the remains of a charm that provided a sense of belonging and safety for emigrants, who might never have been able to return home.

Artist's representation of the objects contained in the fossil,  leaf, five walnuts, and red beans are included in the bag (Source Su Yin).

The red bag expresses meaning of good luck and stay safe, and is usually put under the pillow. It creates a sense of belonging and safety in a fast changing society and anchors people in a psychological safe zone.
